MFSF 2020 in VR with Pilotedge and @RealSimGear Cirrus Perspective+ Stack and SimXR Mixed Reality
Always looking for ways to make IFR training more realistic for when I fly IRL. Being able to see my actual RSG avionics panel in VR is a game changer. This is a full flight from KSNA (my home airport) and KCNO to test out this proof-of-concept. It was recorded with the Quest 3 built-in recording ability.
*NOTE: When flying IFR for real I'm MUCH more methodical (i.e. plate handy, minimums bugged, MAP ready to go). I'm just getting everything dialed in. Next is to add in my motion platform.

Took off on a marginal VFR day on an IFR flightplan to Burbank. Received the unusual vector of 175 degrees on climb-out due to the Huntington Beach Airshow taking place just west of John Wayne and the active TFR.

My friend and former flight instructor (now a United Airlines First Officer) taking off from KCMA. Although he's flying here, I keep my hand loosely on the stick because I like to feel what he's doing. He, however, has the controls. Always a pleasure to get tips from a pro!

I went out of currency during Covid, but successfully completed my Instrument Proficiency Check about a month ago. Woke up on Thursday and saw overcast. I immediately ran to the airport to get some IMC approaches in. Did the ILS to KCNO then back to the ILS at KSNA. Busy but beautiful day to fly!

SoCal TRACON is the absolute best! They are always friendly, helpful and great at their jobs. I thought this woman was excellent. She hits a point in this clip where she goes about three minutes straight of crisp, clean instructions. Absolutely impressive. This was my first IMC since getting my IPC done last month. In SoCal, you wake up and pray for clouds.

Picking up Samantha for mom's 79th birthday. Got to jump in front of a United and Southwest waiting to depart KSNA. Fun trip to KSBA. Was a bit worried about clouds over KSBA because I'm still a week away from finishing my IPC so had to stay visual.

With Covid under control for those of us vaccinated, I got to make good on my promise to take my Criminal Law 310A students flying. This is the return from KMYF in San Diego back to KSNA (John Wayne). Beautiful SoCal day with excellent visibility. Nothing better than sharing the joy and wonder of General Aviation with first timers.

I came across your video while looking up spin recovery videos, and immediately recognized your instructors voice! I’ll be taking my final lesson today with Michael, in which we’ll be taking the Decathlon up for what I’m assuming you did here in this video. I awoke this morning a little nervous, but your video has eased my mind a bit. Plus I know Michael is an incredible pilot. Thanks for sharing your training video! Happy flying!

The daytime game show "The price is Right" was originally hosted by a man with a great souding voice- the late Bob Barker. Without that voice the show would have probably not habe caught on in the popularity it has today. Voice use to mean something then. Not today.

VHF is the reason (OK, excuse) I never went out for pilot training. How *_anyone_* could possibly both _hear_ and _understand_ what is said on the radio in real time is completely beyond me. I would still be replaying the conversation in my head an hour later and going "!! Ah! Is *THAT* what he meant!!"

I'm a Pilot and I share your viewpoint - when it's something non-routine. But most of the time with ATC we are following a standard set of phraseology, and both I and the ATC people are expecting certain information in a certain order. So, if I'm contacting contact Exeter Radar for a radar service, I'd say, 'Exeter Radar, Golf Bravo Tango Sierra Juliet requesting basic service'. Their reply would be, 'Golf Sierra Juliet, pass your message' at which point I would give them my information, preferably in this order: a) Aircraft callsign and type b) Departure point & destination c) Present position d) Level (including pressure setting on altimeter) e) Additional details / Intention Under (e) I'd also give any transponder code I'm squawking. So it might look like this: "Golf Sierra Juilet, PA-28 from Newquay inbound to Exeter, position ten miles west of Newton Abbot, three thousand feet on 1020, squawking 1645 and requesting basic service". They can of course already see my position by the squawk ID number on my radar return, but this just helps them confirm where I am. The point is that all that information might come across very quickly but they are expecting it, in that order, and if anything is garbled they can always say something like, "Golf Sierra Juliet, say again your squawk' or something like that.

@@christopherbedford9897 Absolutely! An immense part of flight training is becoming comfortable, confident, and proficient with radio calls. That being said, learning it while flying at a busy airport on a weekend is a truly stressful but great way to really dive into it :)

In VHF comms, it is standard that the person talking speak in a higher pitch than normal, for clarity reasons. That's why there's a "pilot" voice within ATC-to-pilot comms, and also CTAF. You will also witness this "voice" amongst other services, including emergency services using VHF and UHF radio.
